Navigating Body Image in the Digital Era

Podcast from WRIT 1301 where I talked about how social media is affecting teenage girls and body image. I wanted my podcast to feel like a personal conversation because it can be a difficult conversation to have. We covered three different things in this episode. First, being the fitness community and had a tie in with a guest speaker. Second, we talked about the reasons why some girls might be struggling with this topic. Finally, we discussed some positives and how  to find good in social media.

everyday i do

My submission, “everyday i do”, is a moving image work that I created for my experimental film class at UMN this fall. It was created by digitizing Hi-8 tapes shot by my family from when I was 1 to 5 years old. The tapes are manipulated with a variety of analog and digital methods, including i-frame manipulation and circuit bending for digital and analog glitches respectively. These layers were then combined in Priemere Pro with selected archival recordings and a digitally distorted organ score. In the piece I associate fading or inaccessible memory with the pixelation and degradation that happens with analog and digital media as they decay. It is a diaristic and essayist experiment for me where I can interrogate my childhood, both full of a lot of love and a source of anxiety for me. I am happy to provide a more detailed artist statement if necessary. Thank you for considering!

MODERN LYRICIST

"If you’re reading this, yay. Thank you. I’m happy you’re here.

So here’s the thing, I gottalottafeelings… no really, like all heart here… writing what I feel has always helped me make sense of things I don't understand. Through music, I’ve always found immense comfort and connectedness to others also searching for answers to life's many mysteries. I've always marveled at the power of pen and paper and observation of human nature. I’ve always been fascinated by artists’ lyrical choices and the creation of the stories and poems that become the melodies we hum in the car. I wrote my first song in third grade, and I still have the original copy somewhere...

Years into adulthood, I realized I had completely suffocated my creativity by focusing on external expectations rather than internal exploration. (When you’re a kid, your job is quite literally to explore.) So, the third grader in me said, “f*%k it
.

[Untitled]

It was a Sunday morning, a regular morning unlike any other. And as I walked past the four-season porch to eat breakfast, I saw a sight like no other. The light glimmered through the blinds, and its morning glow shone perfectly, creating a mesmerizing scene.

I never go into that porch anymore. A childhood toy room turned cold storage unit. It wasn't until I saw that particular scene that I stopped in my tracks and took a closer look. Past versions of me were framed and abandoned, yet they welcomed me as I approached the light.
