Open Pedagogy

As OER indicate a shift away from the traditionally copyrighted materials available from commercial publishers, there are opportunities to re-examine the nature of learning that results from more open and permissive interactions with intellectual materials. This is often referred to as Open Pedagogy, an approach that seeks to move away from "frozen" forms of scholarship that allow only one-way interactions. Instead of a worksheet to be filled and turned in and promptly forgotten, a student might instead contribute to a wiki. Using an OER textbook, students can engage and revise the content through a semester, updating examples, adding insight, and addressing pain points in the original text. These active learning interactions can empower students and encourage them to feel like active participants in instruction and academia at large, increasing a sense of mattering and belonging.
