Wikipedia
- WikipediaCiting Wikipedia is generally not acceptable for research papers, however, it is a great starting point to get background information and can lead to scholarly sources. Also, see Academic Use of Wikipedia
TIPS FOR AND CONSIDERATIONS IN USING WIKIPEDIA
- Wikipedia should never be cited as a source. Use the entry to provide you with background and key terms for a topic.
- Wikipedia can lead you to more scholarly resources. Consult the sources listed "References," "Further Reading," "Notes," and "External Links."
- The different language versions of Wikipedia often will have vastly different content in entries. See for instance "Afro Germans" in Wikipedia.en and "Afrodeutsche" in Wikipedia.de (German version).
- TIP: For foreign/international topics, consult the entry in both the English version and the foreign version. Even if you don't read the other language, you can still check out the the sources noted.
- Academic studies have shown Wikipedia to have biases. For example, Wikipedia is said to overly represent the point of view of its editors who tend to be white men from a Northern hemisphere country. See "Gender Bias on Wikipedia" and "Geographical Bias on Wikipedia." Nevertheless, Wikipedia can still be used as a research tool to find more scholarly resources.
Tips for Searching Google
For some of your topics, you may need to search Google. Here are some tips:
1. You can limit to .edu or .org sites. Use sites.edu or sites.org. E.g. afro-swedes site:edu limits results to educational sites.
2. Use quotation marks to search a phrase and exclude any site that doesn't have the phrase. E.g. "black lives matter"
3. The minus symbol (-) can be used to exclude that term from search results. E.g. Using Apple -fruit means most of the results will be related to Apple products not the fruit. You can also use it to exclude results from news sites like -cnn
4. You can filter results for a desired date or date range. After performing the search, go to "Tools" then use the drop down under "Any Time."
5. You can filter results in a specific language. Go to "Tools" then "Advanced Search" and use language pull down.
