Off-campus Access to Licensed Library Resources
There are three ways for current University affiliates to access library journals and databases from off campus.
- Search via the University of Minnesota library website. You will be asked to log in with you UMN Internet ID and password to access licensed resources.
- Login using the U of M Virtual Private Network (VPN) (you will need to download it to your computer)
- Save the Libraries' Proxy Bookmarklet to your browser and select it to reload the page with your U of M credentials

- PubMedSearches MEDLINE, which is the primary source of journal articles for the health sciences (fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, public health, health care systems, and basic sciences). Coverage is from the 1940s to the present. View this tutorial to learn how to go from a general idea to a very precise set of results of journal articles and scholarly materials.
- ScopusSearch for information from scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Covers the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities.
- Web of ScienceA comprehensive interdisciplinary collection of journal article citations. Subjects generally covered are within science and technology, arts and humanities, and social sciences. View this tutorial to learn how to go from a general idea to a very precise set of results of journal articles and scholarly materials.
Find Online Books
Use the Libraries search on the Libraries homepage to find other sources of background information.

- KnovelOnline access to books, databases, and conference proceedings from a number of publishers that cover all areas of engineering and includes content relevant to related sciences (e.g., chemistry and earth sciences). It includes interactive graphs and tables.
Find Patents
- Derwent Innovations Index (Web of Science)Merges patent information from Derwent World Patents Index with the patent citation information from Derwent Patent Citation Index. Users can conduct patent and citation searches of inventions in chemical, electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering.
- Patent Inspiration This link opens in a new windowPatent Inspiration is a fast and powerful interactive database that helps with the navigation and exploration of 69 million patents. The database contains full text (claims & descriptions) of the main searched authorities (WO, EP, US, CA,etc) and contains bibliographic data from over 90 countries. Interactive visualizations and text mining are just a few of the analysis tools available.
Current students, faculty, and staff must register and create personal accounts using University of Minnesota e-mail addresses to save reports, export all patents, make use of the briefcase and use the more advanced analyses tools. Please email ermumtc@umn.edu with a subject line "Request for Patent Inspiration personal account" to start the process of account creation.
- United State Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Public SearchThe United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is the federal agency which grants U.S. patents. Their Patent Public Search has both Basic and Advanced Search options.
- The LensAn open global cyber infrastructure to make the innovation system more efficient and fair, more transparent and inclusive. It serves many of the patent documents in the world as open, annotatable digital public goods that are integrated with scholarly and technical literature along with regulatory and business data.
- Canadian Patents Database (CIPO)CIPO's Canadian Patent Database allows you access 150 years of patent descriptions and images.
- Espacenet: European Patent Office SearchSearches through patent documents filed with the European Patent Office, along with 81 other jurisdictions.
- WIPo PatentscopeSearches through international patent applications along with patent documents from a large number of national patent offices.
- Google Patent SearchAllows for full-text searching of patent grants and applications from the United States and several other major jurisdictions.
Find Healthcare Statistical Information
- ICD 10: International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th RevisionICD10Data.com is a free reference website designed for the fast lookup of all current American ICD-10-CM (diagnosis) and ICD-10-PCS (procedure) medical billing codes.
- CDC FastStatsQuick access to information on disease prevalence, admission rates, office visits and more.
- Health, United StatesHealth, United States is an annual report on trends in health statistics. The report consists of two main sections: a chartbook containing text and figures that illustrates major trends in the health of Americans; and a trend tables section that contains 153 detailed data tables. The two main components are supplemented by an executive summary, a highlights section, an extensive appendix and reference section, and an index.
- Healthcare Statistics Information (HCUPnet)The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP, pronounced "H-Cup") is a family of health care databases and related software tools and products developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership and sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). HCUP databases bring together the data collection efforts of State data organizations, hospital associations, private data organizations, and the Federal government to create a national information resource of patient-level health care data (HCUP Partners).
- WHO - World Health OrganizationWHO coordinates programs aimed at solving health problems, in areas such as immunization, health education and the provision of essential drugs. Working through offices in more than 150 countries, WHO staff work side by side with governments and other partners to ensure the highest attainable level of health for all people.
Finding FDA Resources
- Devices@FDAA resource for finding medical device information from FDA. It includes links to the device summary information, manufacturer, approval date, user instructions, and other consumer information.
- FDA Device AdviceDevice Advice is the Center for Devices and Radiological Health's self-service site for medical device and radiation emitting product information. It is an interactive system for obtaining regulatory information concerning medical devices.
