Music citations - tutorial and activities

Can you build a citation from an article?

According to our style guide, here is how we build a citation for an article:

Author Last Name, First Name. "Article Title." Journal Name #, no. # (Month Year): Starting Page #-Ending Page #.

For example:

Merrick, Paul. "Teufelsonate: Mephistopheles in Liszt's Piano Sonata in B Minor." The Musical Times 152, no. 1914 (Spring 2011): 7-19.

Tips for citing articles

  • Journals often include both volume and issue numbers

    • The volume number is listed as the number alone (for example, 43)

    • The issue number is preceded by “no.” (for example, no. 1)

  • In bibliography entries, include the starting and ending page numbers of the article (for example, 3-16)
