Guide to Research for the Wind Conducting Studio

Your first stop for IPA and diction resources: The Music Library and our digital collections

Through the Music Library, you can access a number of helpful diction resources, which may be helpful for conductors working with singers. These include several databases:

We also have a number of useful print resources:

  • Ron Jeffers et al.'s Translations and Annotations of Choral Repertoire: These print books are available in the Music Library's reference section. If you'd like to consult them while the Music Library is temporarily closed, contact Jessica (jabbazio@umn.edu) to make arrangements!

  • Nico Castel's IPA transcriptions of opera libretti are available in our reference section in print. While the Music Library is temporarily closed, you can request scans of individual sections of these resources to be delivered directly to you digitally! Each title in the PDF list below list is a link that will take you directly to the catalog record for it. Use the attached list to look at the catalog records for these items, identify the sections you need (scroll down to about the middle of the page in each catalog record to see a list of that volume's contents), and then place requests to have individual sections for the operas you need scanned for you by Libraries staff.

Once you know which section you need, you can place a request by clicking on the gray "Book Chapter" box under “Create a Delivery Request” on our Interlibrary Loan page, and include as much information about the section that you need on the form. Under the "Chapter or Section (optional)" section of this form, there's a field for page numbers which, unfortunately, aren't included in the table of contents in the Libraries catalog. When you complete the form, let the team who will be creating these scans know that the sections for individual operas are clearly marked in these books.

  • If you have specific needs for IPA resources and aren't finding what you're looking for, contact Jessica (jabbazio@umn.edu) and we can work together to see what's avaialble.
