This guide serves as the documentation to LibGuides at the University of Minnesota Libraries. All users, regardless of previous LibGuides usage, should review the content on this guide.

How to add a book

If you're adding a book to a catalog, try and only add ebooks (unless you're highlighting a special collection).

  1. Select "Book from the Catalog" from the "Add Content Item" drop down.
  2. First check that the item doesn't exist already under "Reuse Existing Book."
Add a book pop out. Tabbed over to Reuse Existing Book. A search for "Ukraine" shows several options.

  3. If the item doesn't already exist in this area, input the ISBN number and select "Get Book info." If found, the form will automatically fill in the Title, Author, Publication Data, and description. If no ISBN exists, or the book is not found through the ISBN search, please manually enter the Title, Author, and Publication Data.
Box to allow for adding a book from the catalog to a LibGuides page, with the ISBN box filled in. Step 3.

  4. Do not enter a call number.
  5. Get the URL from Primo by selecting "Get Link" in the "send to" section of the catalog record and copying it. Add that link to the URL field in LibGuides.
  6. Under "Use Proxy?," if we pay for the resource, select yes. If we do not, then select no. (Note: Double check the Primo record -- if the item is free, do not select "yes.")
  7. Please enter or edit the description to make it short and concise.
  8. If no cover art automatically populates, please select "none" or "default" to avoid what will appear to be a broken image link. Save the book. It should now be searchable if others want to use it!

Best practices

  • Use online books to provide the easiest access to patrons.
  • Avoid adding textbooks, as the course reserves team handles those via Leganto.
  • Add print books sparingly or not at all. If including this, consider adding a box or area of text explaining how users can access these.
  • Edit/shorten the item description if one is automatically found to avoid information overload.
