LibGuides at the U of M Libraries

This guide serves as the documentation to LibGuides at the University of Minnesota Libraries. All users, regardless of previous LibGuides usage, should review the content on this guide.

Why add a sub-page?

The University of Minnesota Libraries instance of LibGuides does not support the use of tabs (information divided across the top of the page).

However, for subject, topic, and general purpose guides, an excellent alternative to this is to use sub-pages, which are a place to store additional information on a single LibGuide. This documentation guide is an excellent example of sub-pages; each option on the left hand column is a page within one single training guide.

We will use this sub-page to instruct you on how to create your own.

How to add a sub-page

  1. When editing a topic or general purpose guide, on the left hand column, you should see a plus sign option. It will be at the bottom of the column just above "view all guides." Select that.

  2. You will be prompted to give the page a name and description. Please at least provide a name; a description is helpful but not required.
Create a new page pop up

  3. Your page has now been created. You can (and should) add a custom URL for this page. You'll notice that at the top, the URL from your homepage has carried over under "URL". You will need to go up to the gray box above that and customize the URL there. Do not include the portion of your custom URL for the homepage -- that will automatically carry over. See below:

Success! You have added a subpage!

Reordering sub-pages

If you add subpages but want to reorder them, it is similar to reordering boxes. Follow these instructions:

  1. Open the "page" drop down menu in the gray box at the top of the page. You can do this from the home landing page or any sub-page. Select "pages" under the "reorder" section.

  2. Drag and drop the boxes where you want them to go. In this example, we are moving the Demo page from the bottom, to above Statistics. Take care where you drop the item; it may end up as a sub-page of a sub-page, rather than its own sub-page. (Example below).

  3. When you are finished, select "save".

Deleting sub-pages

If you make glaring errors or decide you no longer want a sub-page, you can easily delete it by following these steps:

You will need to be on the page you want to delete in order to delete it. Being on any others will delete those instead, which you don't want to do!

  1. Open the drop down menu in the gray box next to the gears, labeled "page."
    Drop down menu: page
  2. Select "delete page" at the bottom of the drop down menu.
    Delete page selected
  3. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete the page, as once it is deleted you cannot get it back. To confirm, check the box and then select "delete."
