LibGuides at the U of M Libraries

This guide serves as the documentation to LibGuides at the University of Minnesota Libraries. All users, regardless of previous LibGuides usage, should review the content on this guide.

How to add or edit a link/asset

  1. Select "Link" from the "Add Content Item" drop down.
  2. First check that the item doesn't exist already under "Reuse Existing Link." Search in the same way you would for a reusable box. (See the "Reuse a box" tab on this guide for more information.)
The Reuse Existing Link tab. A search for "Aerospace" returns a link for the Aerospace Digital Library.
  3. If the item doesn't already exist: Return to the Create New Link tab. Give your link/asset a descriptive title, and then below that provide the URL.
  4. If the item you are linking to is a licensed resource, be sure to select "yes" next to "Use proxy?" to help direct users to the licensed resource via the link provided.
  5. Once you are satisfied with the contents of each box, select "save."

Note: When adding an asset to a subject guide (book, link, widget, document, etc.), you will automatically be saving the resource to the asset list. You do not have to add an asset specifically to the asset page, or save it every time you would like the resource listed on a guide. This also means that other users will be able to reuse your link/asset if relevant on their pages.

To prevent confusion and duplication, please check to make sure that the asset has not already been created before saving your resource as an asset.

Best practices

  • Check to see that the item doesn't already exist on the Reusable Boxes guide. If it does, and you don't maintain the box, you shouldn't need to edit a link. If you maintain the box, please proceed with editing the link.
  • Check that the link hasn't already been created for a different LibGuide (and is maintained in that way).
  • Reuse the same link/asset on all your guides if needed, rather than creating multiple records for the same link.
