LibGuides at the U of M Libraries

This guide serves as the documentation to LibGuides at the University of Minnesota Libraries. All users, regardless of previous LibGuides usage, should review the content on this guide.

How to add a photo

  1. Select "Rich text/HTML" from the "Add Content Item" drop down.
  2. Select the image button in the text editor (beneath size). If you have an image URL, simply input it here and add your alternative text.
If you do not have an image URL, move on to step three.
  3. Select "browse server."
  4. Upload the image to your personal Drive. You can also create folders to keep your images organized from this window. We highly suggest this!
    Step four, uploading an image
  5. Be sure to include alternative text here to describe the image for those using screen readers. You can also define your image dimensions as you want the image to appear on your LibGuide. (Typical width is around 400-700 pixels depending on how much of the box you want filled.)
Note: Your image may look disproportionate in the box provided -- it will appear correctly on your guide when you save. The default setting is to preserve the image ratio.
  6. Place any text that goes with your image above and below it within the same Rich Text editor box. Go to "source" if you prefer to edit the HTML.
  7. When finished, select "Save and Close." The image should appear at the dimensions you requested. You can add additional text, links, or photos in the same box if you wish. Take note that less is more, and if multiple photos are needed, consider making them quite small (if able).

How to add a video

Before you start

  1. Remember we want to reuse content where we can! Check out the Tutorials page or the Libraries Instruction Kaltura page for videos that have already been created, or with colleagues who have videos on their pages!
  2. To reuse an existing video, select "Media/Widget" from the "Add Content Item" drop down. Tab over to "Reuse Existing Widget" and begin searching for the video by its title. Once you select it, simply save it, and the video should appear in your box.

Add Media/Widget popout. It's in the Reuse Existing Widget tab, with the search term "tutorial." There are many results to chose from.

If you are adding a new video, our best practice is to upload it to Kaltura Mediaspace and contact Lindsay Matts-Benson and Andrew Palahniuk so it can be downloaded and added to the Libraries Youtube.

Remember to check your videos for proper captioning before uploading!

Adding a video from YouTube

  1. Select "Media/Widget" from the "Add Content Item" drop down.
  2. Remember to check the "Reuse Existing Widget" tab for the video or a similar tutorial.
  3. Title your video. You can use the title from YouTube or whatever source you're taking it from, or you can use this for a descriptive text for viewers. Below that, paste the embed code from the host of the video (under "share" on YouTube, for example). You cannot directly upload your video to LibGuides.

Select "Save" and the box should close, with your video embedded into the box.

Best practices

  • Use high quality photos or videos.
  • Include image or video alt/descriptive text.
  • Try to find and use only videos with closed captioning.
  • All image or video use should be intentional — white/empty space is okay!
