Health Statistics and Data Sources

Health related statistics and data sources are increasingly available on the Internet. They can be found already neatly packaged, or as raw data sets. The most reliable data comes from governmental sources or health-care professional organizations.

      • Cancer Statistics Center

        • The Cancer Statistics Center website is a comprehensive interactive resource for learning about the cancer burden in the United States. Produced by the American Cancer Society, the website provides detailed statistics on a range of topics including:

*The estimated numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the current year

*Current cancer incidence, mortality, and survival rates and trends

*State-level risk factor and screening metrics

The website offers a new way to explore the data the Society publishes in its annual Cancer Facts & Figures report, which it has been producing since 1951. The website also, for the first time, merges data from Society researchers' annual paper, Cancer Statistics, published in the American Cancer Society journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

The American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths expected each year in order to estimate the contemporary cancer burden because cancer incidence and mortality data lag two to four years behind the current year.

The Cancer Statistics Center website aims to serve the needs of cancer control advocates, journalists, government and private public health agencies, and policy makers, as well as patients, survivors and the general public, in order to promote cancer prevention and control.
